With much consternation, Salena and I went with black as the color of our second floor. As previously mentioned, we tried looking for a black cork floor, but it costs about $9 sq. ft, because of the extensive dying process to get black, and despite spending all that time cleaning out the tongues and grooves of the old gym floor, we wanted some drama, some POW! Black contrasted against the white walls, was it!
Oh sure, we had our naysayers (like friends, parents, architect, you know, EVERYbody) who might be right, "Black shows dirt." You know, the same crowd who will tell you that a "white car shows less dirt." On the surface, that makes no sense, right? Well, we didn't want to hear the negativity, because we liked it and we did it, with Benjamin Moore's Aura, matte finish, because there is no low VOC porch floor paint available yet. We then sealed that with a Bona waterborne sealer, that is Greenguard approved. Not a perfect process but it worked. By the way, in case you were interested, Bona was used on the first floor as well.
I soon noticed on my first visit after the final seal, that despite how much I wiped the bottom of my shoes, I was leaving little CSI prints, as I inspected each of the rooms. This could be a problem for me, because I'm not a "take your shoes off at the door" guy, despite Salena's urging. My baby feet feel most comfortable fully covered with plenty of cushion, they can't handle the pounding that going barefoot or in socks dishes out. I'll be 90 years old and have the feet of a 20 year old. It will be freaky. But with black now, it may be time for my feet to grow up.

Hey there - apologies, I'm probably an intruder on your blog. However, I did a google search for anybody with any experience with cork flooring and I'm hoping you can give me some practical advice. We have recently migrated and bought a property in Perth , Australia. The house which has good bones, comes with a cork floor which over 30 years now appears quite yellow. I'll spare you my personal adjectives. My question to you is.... is it possible to paint over a sealed cork floor and then reseal it - I'm also drawn to black, it apparently makes the ceiling appear higher? and you're right - great drama.
Many thanks
